Berlin-Schöneberg is a sub district in the district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg. It lies close to Berlin Mitte between the Tiergarten park, City West, Kreuzberg, Tempelhof and Steglitz.
It is a typical central Berlin district with period and new-build properties. There are a number of neighbourhoods, which in some cases differentiate themselves significantly from the each other. In the north, the area between Wittenbergplatz and Nollendorfplatz belong distinctly to the western part of the city. KaDeWe, Germany’s premier department store is located here. The neighbourhood to the south of Nollendorfplatz hosts numerous pubs and bars and is one of the centres of Berlin’s gay scene.
Further to the south is the Bayerisches Viertel, known in the past as Jewish Switzerland on account of the high Jewish proportion of the population. To the east the district is characterised by Potsdamer Strasse, which was one of the most important roads in Berlin before the war, which noticeably deteriorated in GDR times, but its location means that there should again better times ahead.

Schöneberg – cultural centre of the 1920s

As in many areas of Berlin, Schöneberg experienced a significant boom in the period 1871 to 1914. From a sleepy village, the district changed within decades into a metropolitan region. In the 1920s as well as Albert Einstein, famous personalities such as Marlene Dietrich, Billy Wilder and Egon Erwin Kisch lived here.
For the decades after the war, the district became the political centre of West Berlin. The Schöneberger Rathaus (town hall) was the seat of the senate and city council (Abgordnetenhaus). From the balcony, US president John F. Kennedy made his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech.

Freehold apartments in the centre of the city

With the fall of the Berlin Wall, Schöneberg returned to what it in fact always was: a highly urbane district located close to the city centre. The area is connected via the commuter railway routes S1, S2 and S25 and Ringbahn circle line. The railway station Südkreuz is on the ICE (high speed) Hamburg-Berlin-Munich route. There are also four underground railway lines.
