Ziegert Immobilien – Expertise in freehold apartments in Berlin-Pankow
Pankow is a special district. Situated in the northeast of Berlin, it offers contrasting sub districts: there is everything here, from the densely populated, lively Prenzlauer Berg in the south to the almost rural Blankenfelde in the north. As well as Prenzlauer Berg, the sub districts of Pankow and Weißensee have urbane character and old Berlin charm. After the district boundary reform in 2001 a truly mammoth district was created. After some argument, the district leaders decided just to call it Pankow, for historical reasons.
Pankow – History and popular culture
Pankow has always been something special. The well known Berlin folk song ‘Bolle reiste jüngst zu Pfingsten, nach Pankow war sein Ziel’ (‘Bolle just went away at Whitsun, to Pankow he did go’) probably originates from the 19th century. Rather later (more precisely, in 1983) Udo Lindenberg had a massive hit with his ‘Sonderzug nach Pankow’ (‘Special Train to Pankow’). Today, as well as plenty of green space, the district also offers places of interest. They include Schloss Schönhausen, construction of which commenced in 1664. In GDR times it was first the headquarters of the Head of State and then the government’s guest house. Today it houses an exhibition about recent German history. Europe’s largest Jewish cemetery is to be found in Weißensee. The Weißensee Park beckons with bathing stations and excursion pubs and Prenzlauer Berg remains one of the most interesting areas in Berlin, full of vibrancy, bars, galleries and workshops.
