Friedrichshain is one of the districts making up the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. Apart from Mitte, it is the only district in the capital comprising districts merged from the former East and West Berlin. The district‘s name comes from the Volkspark Friedrichshain.

Formerly a purely working class neighbourhood, Friedrichshain developed some time ago into a chic and trendy quarter. After reunification, particularly the alternative scene moved into the cheap but run-down flats. Later they were followed by artists and media and other creative types. In the meantime, the renovated district has become a must-see for all visitors to Berlin.

Friedrichshain – creative, urbane and worth seeing

Friedrichshain has a great many sights to offer. Directly next to the Oberbaumbrücke bridge on the border with Kreuzberg is Oberbaum-City, where many modern companies have moved into the buildings behind the monument listed façades, as well as into the nearby Osthafen (port), where for example MTV and Universal are located. The Volkspark mentioned above was completely renovated in 2004 and, to the most part, reinstated to its former condition.

One particular eye-catcher is Simon-Dach-Strasse, where the street is transformed into open-air restaurants by day and thousands come out at night and one feels reminded of Amsterdam or Barcelona.

Freehold apartments amidst the imposing architecture

Of particular architectural historical interest is the area around the Frankfurter Tor with its huge monument listed buildings from the Stalin era. The East Side Gallery is a further attraction as the largest conserved expanse of the Berlin Wall, painted by more than one hundred artists and preserved as a monument. The O2-World at the Ostbahnhof railway station is Berlin’s largest multi-function arena.

In Berlin it is impossible to be better connected to the public transport network. Transport comprises the east-west commuter line and the Ringbahn circle line. The Ostbahnhof station provides long distance rail connections. Also there are the underground lines U1 and U5, as well as tram and bus routes.
